Buccal Fat Removal

In the past, facial contouring was achieved with bronzer and highlighter, followed by dermal fillers, particularly hyaluronic acid for enhancing cheek volume. A newer method that offers a more natural facial contour in many cases is buccal fat removal, which reduces volume in the cheeks.

Buccal fat pads, located in the central part of the cheeks, are removed to create a more sculpted face. As these fat pads cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise, surgery is the solution, becoming increasingly popular. The result is a defined and contoured face with prominent, high cheekbones.

It’s important to note that buccal fat is a specific anatomical structure (a fat pad). Therefore, non-surgical fat reduction methods (radiofrequency, lipolysis) or surgical methods (liposuction) cannot help.

The presence of buccal fat is genetic, explaining why “chubby cheeks” cannot be reduced otherwise. Removing buccal fat creates a hollow beneath the cheekbone, making the face more attractive.

The surgical incision is small and located inside the cheek, performed under local anesthesia, leading to a shorter recovery period of about 5 days. During recovery, soft and cold foods are recommended. Facial swelling may last around 2 weeks, with the final result visible after a month: a more defined face and cheekbones.

Candidates for this surgery are individuals over 18, once facial skeletal development is complete.

However, some plastic surgeons believe this permanent procedure is not advisable in one’s twenties, as it may lead to a “hollow” facial appearance after a decade or two due to the natural reduction of buccal fat with aging.

This is why an experienced plastic surgeon should assess during consultations if you are a suitable candidate for this surgery.
